Cutting the cord

Cut the cord to save money compared to cable TV? Yes. Increase the amount of internet data consumed? YES. Pay more money due to Cox Internet data caps. YEP!!

There is an article from USA Today that states the average cost of a cable or satellite bill is $85 to $100 a month. Add another $50-$80 for your internet subscription and now your looking at upwards of $180 a month.

To compare my savings, I currently have Dish Network and Cox Internet. I pay $40 a month for Dish, $80 for Cox for a total of $120 a month.

For comparison, if I subscribed to YouTube TV for $40 a month, then I'd have the same bill of $120 a month. The problem comes from my internet data cap! Go over the TB included in the plan and you're looking at an extra $50 to get the unlimited plan. So "cutting the cord", would bring my total to $170 a month.

But now you say, how can I possibly go over my data cap? You'd think that a TB would be plenty! Well add in a couple 4K TV's and 4K streaming content from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Also, add more then one person in a household that will be streaming content and all of a sudden you're watching your internet usage just like the good old days of watching your texting limits!

The only real benefit I see for streaming is the ability to choose what content to pay for. But I come from the old school of cable. I like to turn the TV on and just watch whatever content they feed me. Sometimes I don't want to spend my evening searching for something to watch.

For now, I'll be in a hybrid mode of streaming and satellite TV until the internet data caps are increased or removed. I just plan on a budget of $150 for TV and internet. I don't care who takes that money, as long as I have something to watch. I'll never save money because someone will always come up with a way to take more.
